Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised the farmers to sell the 'Poovan' variety of banana in June and July as its price will remain consistent during this period.
An analysis carried out by the University revealed that the current price of this variety in Coimbatore Farmers' Shandy varies between Rs 18 and 20 per kg and up to July, the price will revolve around Rs 19 per kg.
India with its rich bio-diversity of banana, stood first with a contribution of 265.09 lakh tonnes (LT), 25.5 per cent of world production, from an area of 7.76 lakh hectare in 2013.

Tamil Nadu produced 51.36 LT of all types of banana in 1.11 lakh hectares and has the highest production share of 19.37 per cent, followed by Gujarat with 17 per cent and Maharashtra 13.5 per cent, the analysis said.
'Poovan' is a leading banana variety grown throughout India with location specific ecotypes of 'Palayankodan' in Kerala, 'Poovan' in Tamil Nadu, 'Karpurachakkarkeli' in Andhra Pradesh and 'Alpan' in North Eastern Region, it said.
It is planted during February-April and November- December, and October-January are the months of peak arrivals, it said.
