Prime accused in Odisha nurse murder case held

Three days after a nurse's body was found in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district, a man, apparently her boyfriend and prime suspect in the case, surrendered before police here on Friday.

The 29-year-old man, Kishore Anchal alias Raja, after his surrender, was arrested in connection with the death of the 23-year-old nurse, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jagatsinghpur district, R Prakash, said.

The man, who was absconding till Friday, was being interrogated by a police team, he said.

With the man's arrest, police officers are hopeful of obtaining some vital clues in the case.

The body of the nurse, Niharika Patra, who had been missing since September 8, was found on Biluakhai river bed near Nuapari area in the district on Tuesday.

 

Her family lodged a missing complaint at the Madhupatna police station in Cuttack on September 9.

The body was stuffed in a sack. The hands and legs were tied with a rope, the police said.

Blood samples of the woman's parents have been collected for DNA test in order to establish her identity because the body was highly decomposed and the face was disfigured, the SP said, adding, the post-mortem examination report is also awaited.

The exact cause of death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem examination, he said.

Niharika Patra, a native of Bhingarpur village of Khurda district was working as a nurse at a private nursing home in Cuttack.

According to her mother, she had gone to Cuttack with Raja on September 8 and never returned.

Her family has alleged that Raja was responsible for her death.
