The Canadian government says Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will visit in May for a royal tour.

Governor General David Johnston said today that the federal government extended the invitation to the royal couple.

It will be the 17th visit to Canada for the Prince of Wales and the third for the duchess.

The royal couple last visited Canada in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Queen Elizabeth II is Canada's titular head of state. Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies.

Canadians were thrilled when Prince William and his wife, Kate, travelled across the country in 2011 on their first official trip as a married couple.
