Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will meet World War II veterans when they attend next month's commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Buckingham Palace announced today.
The British heir will meet veterans of the Glider Pilot Regiment, The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, The Parachute Regiment and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, among others, during the two-day visit on June 5 and 6.
The royal couple will also attend remembrance ceremonies at Bayeux Cathedral, Colleville-Montgomery-Plage and the Juno Beach Centre, Courseulles-sur-Mer, to commemorate Canada's role in the Normandy Landings.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend some ceremonies in France, the ambassador to Paris said Thursday.
"President Putin has been invited by President (Francois) Hollande to take part in the ceremonies to commemorate the Normandy landings on June 6. He has accepted the invitation," Alexander Orlov told BFM television.
The D-Day landings, which began on June 6, 1944, helped change the course of the Second World War and led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
