Amid tight security, a day-long bandh was today observed in Gumla by social organisations in protest against yesterday's killing of a college principal.

The day passed off peacefully, the police said.

All colleges and advocates of the Civil Court held separate condolence meetings and suspended classes and court work.

Vehicles were off the roads, while shops and markets downed their shutters spontaneously.

The accused, a third year student of the college, had killed Kartik Oraon College principal Shashi Bhusan in the college campus, and now was in judicial custody.

Gumla Superintendent of Police Bhimsen Tuti said the statements given by the accused during interrogation were not satisfactory and the police would seek his remand for further interrogation.
