The Headmistress of a local Corporation Higher Secondary School, which witnessed protests over action not being taken against a teacher who allegedly addressed a student by his caste name, was today placed under suspension, officials said.

The Corporation Commissioner, Dr VIjaykarthikeyan, after holding an inquiry, signed the order suspending Nirmala Devi, official sources said.

The school recently witnessed protests by students of plus one and two, who reportedly destroyed some furniture in the class rooms, seeking action, including transfer of the teacher, who allegedly addressed a student by his caste name, and against Nirmala Devi, for not taking action against the teacher, officials said.

After the incident, a preliminary inquiry was held by Karthikeyan and pending a departmental probe, she was placed under suspension, they said.
