A 32-year-old prisoner, who was allegedly thrashed by cops a few days ago, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital here, police said today.

Manish breathed his last in the government hospital last evening, they said.

A dairy owner, Manish, who was lodged in the Patiala Central jail, was admitted to the hospital on November four in critical condition, police said.

Protesting his death, Manish's family alleged the cops from Malerkotla police station had picked him from his house on October 28 in connection with an FIR lodged under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance Act.

He was roundly thrashed by the policemen, they alleged.

Police said Manish was shifted to Malerkotla prison on October 29 and was later sent to the drug-addiction centre in the Patiala Central Jail.

Duty Magistrate Tavleen Singh recorded the statements of the victim's family.
