The prisoner Sanjay Mahto, who was lodged in jail in connection with an extortion case, hanged himself in the jail toilet with a bed sheet, Sub Divisional Police Officer Neeraj Kumar said.
Mahto was a resident of Benibad in Muzaffarpur district, he said.
District Magistrate Narmadeshwar Dayal has ordered an investigation into the matter, Kumar added.
