Stunning court staffers and police, a 36-year-old prisoner today threw his slippers at a judicial magistrate, which landed close to her, when he was produced before the court here for routine hearing in a criminal case.

Elumalai was produced before the Poonamallee Judicial Magistrate Nisha in connection with a theft case registered by the Avadi Railway Police last year.

"Soon after he was produced before magistrate Nisha, he lost his cool and he threw his slippers at her," a police official told PTI.

"It is not known what provoked him to act like that and we have received a complaint from court staff," he said, adding, the magistrate was escorted safely to a room immediately after the incident.

"He seems to have done a similar thing in the past as well in Vellore, we are investigating," he added.

"He had some grievances with the pace of progress of the case against him," he further said.

An inmate of Puzhal Central Prison here for the past nine months, Elumalai was taken back into custody after the incident and put back in jail.
