There are six vacancies in the Maharashtra Legislative Council and Congress and NCP have decided to contest on three seats each.
Discussions were also learnt to have been held on the issue of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief, a post that has been vacant since the resignation of Kripashankar Singh in the wake allegations of corruption.
Gandhi also expressed concern over the drought situation in the state and sought an update on the steps being taken by the state government to tackle the problems faced by the people.
Besides Chavan, the meeting was attended by Maharashtra Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, AICC in-charge of the state Mohan Prakash and Ahmad Patel, political secretary to Congress president.
Rahul Gandhi had recently visited the drought-hit parts of the state. The visit had been roundly criticised by Opposition Shiv Sena BJP as "drought tourism" by the Congress leader.

The meeting also comes in the wake of Congress leadership telling Chavan to get his act together or else it would be forced to look for a replacement.
Congress president is learnt to be taking inputs from leaders on the strategy ahead for Maharashtra where the party is in a coalition with Sharad Pawar's NCP since 1999.
A section of Congress disfavours Chavan leading the party in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state scheduled for 2014 for alleged "decision deficit" in his government.
