Private bus and mini bus operators have called off tomorrow's one-day strike in the city to protest against police atrocities after the principal secretary promised to look into the matter.

"Principal secretary of the state Transport Department Alapan Bandyopadhyay asked us to wait for 15 days so that he can look into our request to stop police atrocities and huge fines on our drivers and conductors. So we have decided to call off tomorrow's strike," Joint Council of Bus Syndicates general secretary Tapan Banerjee told PTI.

Banerjee said that if there was no "fruitful solution" to their problems, they would go in for "back-to-back" strikes after the lapse of next 15 days.

"It has become quite impossible for us to operate buses because of police atrocities. They are issuing fines for reasons unclear to us. It is most unfortunate that the state government did not listen to us and reduce the fine," he said.

The strike had been called by Bengal Bus Syndicate, Joint Council of Bus Syndicates along with Minibus Operator Coordination Committee, All Bengal Bus and Minibus Sammanay Samity and Howrah Jilla Bus Syndicates besides, operators in Howrah and both North 24-Parganas and South 24-Parganas districts.
