An officer of a private firm, which was accorded a sub-contract by NHAI for constructing a national highway, was today abducted from Assam's Dima Hasao district, police said.

The officer, Rameswar Reddy, was abducted at gunpoint by five unidentified persons near Hathikhali area while he was coming from Lumding on a motorbike, Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police V Shiva Prasad Ganjala said.

Reddy had earlier "received threats from a certain militant outfit operating in the area and was provided security by the police," Ganjala said.

He was warned not to move without security but he did not pay heed to it following which the militants took advantage of the situation and abducted him, the SP said.

Due to security threat, police had also deployed a commando party for the firm in the area.

An operation has been launched in the area to rescue the abducted officer, Hasao added.
