The Prohibition and Eradication of Ragging Bill, 2011, piloted by Janardhan Waghmare (NCP), seeks to debar the convicted student from continuing studies in any schools or colleges for three years.
Waghmare said apart from humanitarian and social aspects, ragging has serious economic implications and bearing on the standards of education.
"It is a recognised form of human right violation. There is a national outcry to prohibit ragging and all sections of the society demanded that the government must take proactive steps to eradicate this menace," he said.
Noting that ragging came in India with English medium education, he said the menace is a product of the West.
"We did not find it in any ancient educational institution in India," he said, demanding major steps to eradicate this menace from schools and colleges.
Narendra Budania (Cong) sought a permanent end to the menace.
"Ragging was earlier confined to medical and engineering colleges. But, it has now even spread into the schools. It should be stooped," he said.
