Large number private universities "have led to commercialisation of education in the state," Himachal Industries minister Mukesh Agnihotri today said.

Agnihotri, who was chief guest on the second day of Foundation Day celebrations of Himachal University stressed on the need for "quality higher education" so that pass outs were employable and could stand in global petition.

However, mushrooming of private universities during the past five years have led to degradation and crass commercialisation of education, he said.

Emerging scenario in the education sector has cast a shadow and the biggest challenged faced by the state was to improve the quality of higher education.

"Private universities have started selling courses like commodity," the minister alleged.

Accusing private universities of introducing several new courses with hardly any job potential, Agnihotri said after completing these courses, students are left in the lurch.

He asked university authorities to speedup the process of establishing new campuses for Himachal University at Ghanahatti, Una and Mandi to extend higher education facilities to maximum students in the state.
