Probe sought into death of 2 onboard decommissioned submarine

A petition has been filed in the Madras High Court by the wife of a man, who died along with another person of asphyxiation onboard decommissioned naval submarine INS Vagli while taking up work for towing it.

Justice R Subbaiah adjourned to February 26 the petition filed by B Viyaya Bharathi wife of Bhavani Shankar seeking a high-level inquiry into the death of her husband and the co-worker and compensation.

Shankar and Mahendran died while four others took ill on January 27 after inhaling "poisonous" gas when they opened a manhole on the deck while undertaking welding work for towing the submarine.
 

The submarine is to be converted into a Maritime heritage museum at Mamallapuram near here by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.

Petitioner said her husband was the only breadwinner for their family and sought adequate compensation.
