The government today stressed the need for producing clean and green steel with an eye on protection of environment.

The emphasis comes at a time when pollution levels in the national capital have reached alarming levels.

"Besides quality, the protection of environment is equally important. For this, we have to work in the direction of producing clean and green steel," Minister of State for Steel Vishnu Deo Sai said here.

Addressing the India Steel Summit, the minister asserted that there is a need to bring discharge of carbon footprint to bare minimum.

"So, we should produce steel in such a manner that there is a minimum impact on environment," Sai said.

The minister expressed confidence that the steel industry will help reduce environmental pollution and produce good quality steel at par with the global level.

Pollution touched calamitous levels here yesterday as a thick blanket of grey smog hung across the region, prompting the government to declare closure of schools till Sunday, halt construction activities and ban entry of trucks into the city.

In the NCR, Ghaziabad and Noida were the worst affected. As per reports, the air quality index (AQI) had slipped to alarming levels.

Pollution in Delhi-NCR continues to be in the severe category.
