Promoting food processing in the state was one of the prime objectives of the Punjab government and it intends to address the problems faced by the industry in a new food processing policy to be notified shortly, minister Pratap Singh Kairon said today.

Urging the Centre to play a chief role in the development of food processing in the country, the state Food and Civil Supplies Minister said synchronisation was important for the industry to counter volatility in prices.

Kairon was addressing the first meeting of the State Food Processing Development Council (SFPDC) here. SFPDC has been constituted under National Mission on Food Processing.

The council's membership comprises representatives of industry and farmer associations, banks and food processing experts from Punjab Agricultural University and National Agro Biotechnology Institute, besides heads of various state government departments.

The function of the council is to play an advisory role in policy-making in the field of food processing, Kairon said.

The council will also monitor the implementation of the National Mission on Food Processing.
