Government proposes to cover 90 per cent of rural households with piped water supply by 2022, Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation Bharatsinh Solanki told the Rajya Sabha.

The aim is to ensure less than 10 per cent use public taps and less than 10 per cent use hand pumps or other safe and adequate private water sources.

He said his Ministry has prepared a strategic plan to ensure coverage of the plan.

As per 2011 census, 30.80 per cent of rural households in the country get tap water and 70.60 per cent of urban households are covered by tap water supply.

By 2017, he said in Rajya Sabha in a written reply, the plan is to ensure that at least 50 per cent of rural households are provided piped water supply.
