Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Sudarshan Bhagat, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today, said that the proposal to give Constitutional status to the NCBC on lines of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) is in the process of the Ministry.

The modalities to amend the Constitution that are required to give constitutional status to the NCBC takes time, he added.

The issue was also separately raised in Lok Sabha by TRS member Boora Narsaiah Goud.

He emphasised the need to give more teeth to the National Commission for Backward Classes by giving it constitutional status to ensure fair deal to the backwards who, he said, constituted more than half the population of the country.
