: A group of people staged a road-roko protest in Pamban today, protesting the alleged official apathy to frequent accidents happening on the bridge.

According to the local people, over a dozen accidents had taken place after the National Highways authorities started resurfacing the road with slippery materials. A woman, who was riding pillion in a two-wheeler was knocked down by a truck on Wednesday and succumbed to the injuries on Thursday.

They said yesterday a fisherman was fatally knocked down by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on the bridge.

The victim, Jebestian (45), was proceeding towards Mandapam on a two-wheeler when the Madurai - Rameswaram bus coming in the opposite direction, knocked him down on Friday evening.

The protestors also demanded that the road be relaid.

A stir was held yesterday also to seek action against the frequent mishaps on the Pamban bridge.
