About a dozen protesters have stormed a USD 1,000-a-plate New York City luncheon where Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was delivering a speech.

Four protesters crashed the lunch today through the side stairs at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. They were forced out by hotel security staff as they chanted: "Trump is trying to bring us down, targeting people black and brown."

Protester Martha Acklesberg says about nine others who paid to attend the event stood up to make statements during the GOP frontrunner's speech.

The attendee from the group Jews for Racial and Economic Justice says Trump quipped during the disruption "when you're the front runner you get a lot of attention."

Trump's appearance was sponsored by the Commonwealth Club, a Pennsylvania Republican group. It was closed to the media.
