The Madhya Pradesh Congress will stage a state-wide protest against the spiralling prices of onion and tur dal on Thursday by distributing both these commodities for free to the poor people.

"The BJP-led NDA in the run-up to the polls had promised to bring good days by bringing black money stashed in foreign countries, deposit Rs 15 lakh each in citizen's accounts and reducing inflation," Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Spokesman K K Mishra said in a statement.

"But it failed on all fronts with the prices of onions and tur dal spiralling like never before," he added.

"On the call of the State Party President, Arun Yadav, Congress will stage a statewide protest on the issue of inflation on August 27 and also distribute free of cost both the staples to poor persons to draw the attention of Centre and the state government on the issue," he added.

While the retail price of tur dal is around Rs 140/kg, the onions - which are a key kitchen staple are being sold at Rs 80/kg causing severe hardship to consumers.
