"Providing compensation to rape victims is not the solution. Government should instead strive to ensure exemplary punishment of the culprits to act as a deterant for perpetrators of such crimes," WBPCC president Pradip Bhattacharya told a rally at Esplanade here.

The West Bengal government recently decided to financially compensate victims of crime against women including rape and trafficking.

Leader of Opposition, Suryakanta Mishra, belonging to the CPI(M) told a press conference that the announcement of compensation for rape victims was not 'clear'.

"Law and order situation is deteriorating in the state with increasing number of rapes and murders," Mishra said.

Stating that "it is an alarming situation," Mishra, said, "even today there were two incidents of gang rape, one in Durgapur and the other in Baruipur where the victim was murdered."

At the Congress rally, Bhattacharya, whose party is an ally of the ruling Trinamool Congress, referring to spread of dengue in the metropolis and adjoining places, said that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation should ensure cleanliness and proper sanitation at public places.

He suggested that the government should call an all-party meeting to discuss these issues.
