Pointing out the present day generation should also know the Sanskrit 'hymns', eminent classicist Pt Ajay Chakraborty said only this can inculcate gradually diminishing values.

"In whatever way possible Sanskrit hymns, literary pieces as well as classics of other religions need to be familiarised among the present day generation. Apart from epics," Chakroborty told PTI after the launch of Bengali readaptation of Mahabharata, 'Katha Amrita Saman'.

"I have told Bratya (West Bengal Higher Education minister Bratya Basu) in today's programme that we need to initiate children to our past treasure trove may be through different means - campaigns or programmes," the celebrated classical vocalist said.

Coming to the Bengali 'Katha Amrita Saman', he said "I have not regularly gone through the serialised editions in Saptahik Bartoman. But author Nrisinghaprasad Bhaduri is a close friend and it was an enriching experience whenever we interacted about the tome."

Bhaduri said while he has already amassed contents to bring out four volumes spanning the 'adi parbo' he was determined to complete the work.

"I have not compromised on the language or style fronts which you can't do with our epics but sure I have sought to make it as much understandable as possible to the readers," the veteran researcher-writer Bhaduri said.

The book has been brought out by Dey's Publishing.
