Budding athletes in India can now get a scintific assesment of their potential with the launch of country's first privately-owned Sports Medicine Research Institute called Medsport HSPRI, which was inaugurated by print legend P T Usha and her protege Tintu Luka here today.

In fact, Tintu became the first athlete to get herself tested under the watchful eyes of her mentor Usha at the facility.

"It has been a long standing dream of every Indian athlete to reach the pinnacle of his or her potential and win medals for India at the highest level of international sports," said Vivek Raja, the Managing Partner of Sports Works Consulting LLP.

"However for want of proper scientific and methodical testing leading to accurate training protocols and performance prediction, they have been on the back foot so far. MEDSPORT HSPRI, Pune now has the answers with the help of Lt Gen (Dr) SA Cruze who has been the pioneer of sports medicine activities in India," he added.

Earlier Dr Cruze was spearheading the Indian Army's sports medicine programme which produced a galaxy of national and international level medallists including Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships in all sports disciplines.

This facility, which was only earlier available to the Armed Forces sportsmen, is now being made available to the general public for the first time.

The institute also offers sports injury rehabilitation with exercises alone.

What sets Medsport apart from other sports medicine centres is that it is the only one to offer Lactate and Heart rate based training programs and periodization information for athletes of any sport be it tennis, badminton, athletics, football, boxing or swimming etc.
