The public prosecutor of Birbhum district court today appealed for the release of 36 accused, whose names were figured in the chargesheet submitted by the police in connection with a clash in which a policeman was fatally injured.

Public Prosecutor Ranjit Ganguly told the court of First Additional District Judge Indranil Bhattacharya that the 36 accused were 'innocent' and that he has based his appeal on the basis of a letter written to him by the people of Dubrajpur in Birbhum district, where the clash had occured in May, that the accused were innocent, ailing and poor.

The 36 were found guilty by police during investigation in connection with a clash in which Amit Chakrabarty, a sub inspector of Dubrajpur police station, was critically injured. He succumbed to his wounds after two months in July.

Chakrabarty [32] had suffered serious splinter injuries when crude bombs were hurled at him during a clash between CPI-M and Trinamool Congress.

The judge set January 19 as the date of hearing.
