Puducherry BJP seeks Centre's help to protect farmlands

The Puducherry unit of BJP today sought the Centre's intervention to prevent conversion of fertile farm lands in the Union Territory into residential plots.

A delegation of BJP functionaries from Puducherry, led by its President, V Saminathan today presented a memorandum containing a charter of demands, to the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh in New Delhi, release said today.

The delegation sought the Minister's intervention to prevent the conversion of fertile farm lands in Puducherry into residential plots and for non-agricultural projects.

Saminathan stated that the memorandum apprised of the alleged fast conversion of farm lands into plots, that has led to shortage of rice and also hit the farmers and farm labourers in the Union Territory.
 

It also appealed to the Centre to ensure that the sugarcane farmers, who are now facing a crisis due to non-payment for their product by the sugar mills, were relieved of their hardships.
