MLAs of the ruling Congress and DMK, its ally in Puducherry, have sought action against Lt Governor Kiran Bedi for allegedly committing breach of privilege of the state assembly with her "derogatory" remarks against the House and its members.
The MLAs called on Speaker V Vaithilingam and submitted a memorandum to him seeking action against Bedi, who is involved in a running feud with the V Narayanasamy government over various issues.
Signed by seven of the 15 Congress lawmakers and one of the two DMK MLAs, the memorandum alleged comments and statements made by Bedi were "derogatory in nature and cast a slur on the privileges of the members and the House as a whole."
In the memorandum submitted yesterday, the MLAs referred to the reported remarks of the Lt Governor warning of "serious consequences" if the interim order of the Supreme Court allowing three nominated lawmakers to attend the proceedings of the assembly was not followed.
"This is causing concern to the legislators and those supporting freedom of the House," the memorandum said.
It also recalled how Bedi had made tabling of the Appropriation Bill, which allows the government to withdraw money from the consolidated fund, conditional to the speaker permitting the three nominated MLAs to attend the proceedings. All three are BJP leaders, whose nomination the speaker had refused to acknowledge.
"The recent statement of the Lt Governor that lawmakers should not become law breakers is particularly telling," the memorandum said, insisting it created an adverse impression about legislators in public.
The signatories to the memorandum included K Lakshminarayan, parliamentary secretary to chief minister Narayanasamy.
