Puducherry government faces fiscal crisis: Minister

The Puducherry government has decided to prune several schemes as it was facing an unprecedented fiscal crisis, minister K Kandasamy said today.

An "unprecedented financial crisis has arised out in Puducherry due to various reasons including, the demonetisation and introduction of GST", he said,

He was speaking at the Children's day celebrations on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The staff of anganwadi centres have not been paid their wages for the last four months due to the paucity of funds, he said.

He said that the government had taken a decision to restrict availability of the benefits of welfare schemes and freebies like free rice only to the poor.
 

Kandasamy said that an enumeration was being done to prepare list of those living in absolutely poor condition so that the benefits of welfare schemes and freebies would be available to them.
