Puducherry government today signed an MoU with Bengaluru-based Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide 'nutritious and hygienic' food under the mid-day meal scheme in the Union Territory.
Secretary to Education A Anbarasu and the vice-chairman of the foundation Chanchalapathi Dasa signed the Memorandum of Understanding here in the presence of Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan, a release said.
The foundation, involved in preparation and supply of mid-day meal for students in different parts of the country for the past 17 years, would operate the scheme in Puducherry from June next year and cover 50,000 students of 300 schools.
It would modernise the central kitchen of the Department of Education here at a cost of Rs 13 crore, the release said.
Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan told reporters that the territorial government had been implementing the mid-day meal scheme for years, covering students from pre-primary level to Class XII.
