Puducherry government has rolled out its 'Road Safety policy and Action Plan' to reduce road accidents by 50 per cent by 2020.
A gazette notification of the Transport Department said today that the plan had been prepared in agreement with the directives of the Supreme court and also the Union Road Transport and Highways ministry, covering both preventive and post accident aspects of road safety measures.
The notification said the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)had in its report relating to Puducherry published in 2013 observed that the Union Territory recorded the highest rate of accidental deaths per lakh of population.

The NRCB in its report in 2013 reported that with 68.3 deaths per lakh of population as against national average of 32.6 per lakh of population, the Union Territory recorded highest rate of fatal accidents, the notification said.
Of the 1,451 road accidents recorded in 2013, 228 were fatal.
The government's Action Plan envisages an accident free and safe mobility for all. It embraces legislative, enforcement and education to achieve reduction of accidents and the policy also falls in line with National Road Safety policy guidelines.
The line departments, including police, PWD, revenue, excise and town and country planning would prepare their respective action plans based on the Transport Department's plan.
These plans would pave the way for reduction of road accidents from the present trend by 50 per cent by 2020 and maintain zero growth level further, it said.
The Plan would be revised periodically every three years and the goals would be reset, the notification added.
