Zoo personnel spotted pug marks of a Royal Bengal tigress and a cub yesterday but Nandankanan authorities said there was no cause for panic as the animals, who were believed to be moving in the sanctuary area, had not been sighted.
"The pug marks have been spotted in the sanctuary area away from the zoo and the visitors have no access there. Zoo authorities are alert and there is nothing to panic about," Deputy Director of Nandankanan C R Das said.
Zoo officials pointed out that the pug marks were noticed near the Lion's Safari and close to a yard where animal wastes are dumped.
It is believed that the animals must have moved into the area from the wild in nearby Chandaka forest area, they said, adding that such animals normally avoid venturing out of forest areas during day.
Pug marks of a tigress and a cub had been spotted in Chandaka-Dampada sanctuary areas last month though the animals were not sighted so far, forest officials said.
