Pulitzer winning Oncologist-writer among Padma awardees

US-based onclogist and writer Siddarth Mukherjee, founder of Delhi State Cancer Institute Rajesh Grover, eminent neurologist from SGPGI, Lucknow Sunil Pradhan and Neonatologist Neelam Kler are among 29 medical professionals chosen for Padma awards this year.

Noted neonatologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Kler is the only Medical professional who has been awarded with coveted Padma Bhushan this year.

Kler's husband cardiologist T S Kler is also the recipient of Padma Bhushan in the year bringing them in rare category of couples who have been conferred with the civil honours.

Noted Oncologist and author of Pulitzer winning 'The emperor of all maladies: a biography of cancer', Mukherjee has been given Padma Shri for this year.
 

Pradhan, Professor in neurology at the Institute, got fame for unique distinction of describing two new clinical signs in medical literature for muscular dystrophy for which he was given ICMR Award in 1994 and 1996 respectively.

Recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, he was the first medical professional to study intercostal nerves in a non-invasive manner by using technique which is known in medical sciences as 'Pradhan's method'.

Among the recipients of the civilian honours is founder Director of Delhi State Cancer Institute Rajesh Grover who has put in over 30 years in various capacities as Oncologist at reputed hospitals of the country--PGIMER, Chandigarh, Safdarjang Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, GTB Hospital and UCMS, DSCI.

The Institute founded by Grover is known for offering completely free treatment with all the modern testing facilities for cancer patient.

"We do not have any waiting list. The hospital is always open. Even if patient comes at five in the evening, he or she is not turned back," Grover told PTI.
