The garbage continued to pile up in the city today as the residents of Phursungi and Devachi Uruli villages did not allow the authorities to dump it in the depot located in the twin villages for over two weeks.
The villagers today staged a protest and took out a symbolic funeral of garbage depot located in these villages.
NCP MP Supriya Sule visited the dumping site in the twin villages and participated in the protest.
Workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena protested outside the house of Mayor Mukta Tilak, who is in Mexico for a conference.
The district guardian minister Girish Bapat is in Australia.
Sule told reporters that the decision makers are on foreign trips.
"I have written a letter to the mayor and also tagged (on twitter) chief minister Devendra Fadanvis and sought his intervention," said Sule.
"Here the villagers are ready to talk to the administration, however, no one is ready to come and listen to them," the MP claimed.
The dumping of garbage issue cropped after a fire broke out at the garbage depot. Though the fire was brought under control, however, villagers complained of fumes emanating from the garbage depot, prompting them to stop the trucks carrying garbage from the city.
The villagers have been demanding that the civic administration should shift the depots to other places as continuous dumping of garbage has polluted the groundwater and atmosphere, leading to health hazards.
Meanwhile, civic chief Kunal Kumar, who visited the sites yesterday, assured that the administration will soon resolve the issue.
