Pune's Suryakant Pehare wins Nashik marathon

Pune's Suryakant Pehare won the Nashik marathon while Changule Tanaji of Kolhapur came second, here today.

Pehare finished the 42.195km distance in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 02 seconds to walk away with Rs 1 lakh prize money in the national-level event. Tanaji clocked 2 hours and 32 seconds to complete the race and bagged Rs 75,000.

Dattatreya Jaybhave of Pune finished third, taking 2 hours, 33 minutes and 10 seconds to complete the race. He was awarded Rs 51,000.

In half-marathon (21.097 km) for women, Washim district's Savita Thoke stood first (01:32:39), followed by Manju Sahane (01:38 :46) and Radhika Kumavat (01:49:06), both from Nashik.
 

Thoke was awarded a cash prize of Rs 15,000, while Sahane and Kumavat received Rs 11,000 and Rs 9,000 respectively.

Besides the two main events, races were held in over a dozen other categories. In all Rs 6,82,600 in cash prizes were distributed among the winners.

Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj (MVPS), a city-based education institute, had organised the events. Former cricketer V V S Laxman flagged off the full marathon and later distributed prizes and trophies.
