Seeking punitive action against those doctors, who were allegedly responsible for the post-delivery deaths in the Sait Memorial Hospital here, over 200 workers of two political parties and NGOs today staged a demonstration in front of the hospital.

The workers of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhakam (TMMK) and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NMK) wanted the government to modernise the hospital and also appoint regular doctors, besides taking stringent action against the erring doctors.

Abdul Samad, Nilgiris district president, TMMK, alleged that the staff, appointed for cleaning and security through a private agency had attended the patients and some of the surgeries were conducted at the operation theatre, meant for HIV patients only, by them.

He, along with Rajan, district secretary, NMK alleged that these staff, besides their assigned duties, were used for multi purpose, including administering injection and attending to the pregnant women.

A large number of police were deployed, following the demonstration, police said.

Five women had lost their lives during post delivery care in the last 10 days from December 23.
