Punjab Agro starts marketing chain for organic wheat farmers

State-owned Punjab Agro today said it has started a marketing chain to help registered farmers to sell produce of organic wheat to global markets.

Managing Director of Punjab Agro K S Pannu said 517 farmers from the state have been successful in getting fully organic certification status for cultivating 1,144 acres of land.

"These farmers spread over all the districts of the state were subjected to three years of gruelling process to enable them to qualify for getting their produce certified as organic," he said.

Pannu said the SGS Limited, authorised agency of Agriculture Produce Export and Development Agency (APEDA) has finally been able to get the certificates to these farmers who were connected with Punjab Agro Industries Corporation for undertaking Organic Farming.
 

Punjab Agro was associated for three years of consecutive annual external audits interspersed by internal audits of practising, adherence and monitoring of organic standards of the selected 517 farmers on 1,144 acres of land.

He said the certified organic wheat grown by these farmers are being marketed by PAIC.
