"Central government should pay more attention to guarding the international border. BSF should be more alert and check the trafficking as all drugs come from Pakistan and Afghanistan through the border," he told reporters after a meeting with Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde here.

Last fortnight, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had claimed that seven out of 10 youths in Punjab have a drug problem, triggering a controversy.

The Chief Minister said drugs were also being couriered through the Punjab-Rajasthan border and steps should be taken to check smuggling of the contraband from that state too.

Badal said he took up with Shinde the issue of alleged interference in the affairs of Sikh religion and urged him to do the needful to put and end to it.

"I hope that the Home Minister will take appropriate action," he said.
