Punjab forms committee to monitor prices of food items

Amid spiralling prices of onion and potatoes, the Punjab government today formed a five-member committee to monitor prices of essential commodities including vegetables, pulses, edible oils and milk.

The high-powered committee has been constituted on the instruction of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, said a spokesperson here.

He said Secretary (Planning) will be the Chairperson of the committee, whereas Director (Food and Civil Supplies), Director (Horticulture) and General Manager (Marketing), Punjab Mandi Board, will be its members. The Economic Advisor, Punjab, would be the Member Secretary of the committee.

The spokesperson said the committee will oversee the prices of essential commodities on a daily basis.
 

It will also supervise the action taken by various authorities under the Essential Commodities Act.

The committee will also monitor adequate supply of these commodities under the public distribution system.
