Punjab forms panel to look into animal deaths due to toxic

Punjab Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike today ordered the formation of a high-powered committee to look into the deaths of animals due to toxic green fodder in certain areas of the state.

In this committee, Animal Husbandry Department Director, Dairy Development Director, vice-chancellors of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) and Punjab Agricultural University and progressive animal rearers of the state have been included, according to an official release here.

Ranike said the committee would examine every technical aspects to put a stop to the toxic green fodder and also suggest measures for spreading awareness amongst the animal rearers.
 

He said recommendations of the committee would be implemented in order to protect the interests of the animal rearers.

He appealed for increased use of indigenous urea to eradicate the toxic green fodder.

The minister also advised them to use urea and other chemicals after consultation with and as per recommendations of Punjab Agricultural University.

Ranike said in case of any doubt on quality of fodder, animal rearers can get samples of the fodder tested from veterinary polyclinic of the district concerned or from North Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Jalandhar.
