Punjab govt announces compensation package for crop damage

The Punjab government today sanctioned Rs 32.82 crore as compensation to farmers for crop damage due to natural calamity.

Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said the farmers suffered heavy loss due to rain and hailstorm for which the state government has approved Rs 32.82 crore for 51788-acre crop damage from June 2017 to July 2018.

The crops were damaged at various places, including Patiala, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Faridkot, and Bathinda.

Sarkaria said the compensation would prove to be a big relief for farmers who had suffered heavy crop damage due to the inclement weather.

The minister said the state government was fully committed to ensure welfare of the farmers and leaving no stone unturned to help them come out from the current agrarian crisis.

 

The Punjab government has already launched debt waiver scheme for the small and marginal farmers, he added.
