The Punjab government has cut down on the tax levied on state-run and private buses and mini buses.

The issue was today discussed in a cabinet meeting. A three-member committee was earlier set up to look into the demands raised by the unions of Punjab Roadways, private and mini buses, a spokesman of the Punjab Transport department said.

The tax on mini buses has been slashed from Rs 50,000 to Rs 30,000 annually whereas for Punjab Roadways and private buses, it has been reduced from Rs 3.03 to Rs 2.73 per bus per kilometre per day. The number of tax holidays has been increased from 5 to 6 days, the spokesman said.

The Cabinet also decided to waive off Motor Vehicle Tax for 10 days for buses that suffered losses due to uproar over the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib.
