As part of an awareness campaign launched against drugs and illicit drug trafficking in Punjab, several government officers and employees today took a pledge against drugs.
Addressing the officers and employees at Punjab Civil Secretariat premises, Harbhajan Singh, Under Secretary Secretariat Administration, said that in 1987, the United Nations adopted the resolution to observe International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to commemorate Lin Zexu's dismantle of the opium trade in just before the First Opium War in China.
Similar Pledge taking ceremony was held in Punjab's mini Civil Secretariat where the officers and employees were administered oath by Balwant Singh, Joint Secretary General Administration.
Meanwhile, at several places in the state, rallies were held to mark the day. In these rallies, policemen, school boys and girls, members of social organisations, doctors and advocates participated, reports here said.
A report from Moga said that Paramraj Singh Umranangal, Inspector General Police (IGP) Bathinda Zone comprising Mansa, Bathinda, Muktsar, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Moga declared to launch an intense drive to teach lesson to the gangsters and drug peddlers.
Some of the gangsters using their influence, were also using the mobiles and internet facilities inside the jails, he said, adding that in this respect all the seven district police chiefs of the zone had been directed to launch an action in this respect.
Police is going to launch a fresh move to bring out all notorious gangsters on production warrants from different jails, he said, adding that police want to have a fresh round of interrogation of these gangsters with different objectives to nab their accomplices and to trace some pending cases.
