Olympian athlete late Subedar Makhan Singh's son Bhupinder Singh was today appointed as a helper in the office of District Welfare Officer Hoshiarpur with immediate effect by the Punjab government.
In recognition of the performance of Makhan Singh, who had the honour of beating legendary athlete Milkha Singh twice in the National Games at Kolkata in 1962, the Punjab government took this decision.
Makhan Singh's family has been living in a state of penury and the Punjab government decision to offer a job to Bhupinder was aimed at rehabilitating the family of former althlete of national repute, who belonged to Chhabewal, Hoshiarpur here.

The family of Makhan Singh, who also have a physically challenged member to take care of, would be provided 'Disability relief' from Punjab Amalgamated Fund, a release said here today.
