The Punjab government today pruned the list of dignitaries who were authorised to use red beacons atop their official vehicles.

The goverment issued a fresh notification curtailing the categories of people using the red beacons from 17 to 13, an official release said.

It also withdrew the facility to religious leaders, vice-chancellors and a number of civil and police officers.

The release said the notification was issued on the directions of the Supreme Court which is hearing a Special Leave Petition in this regard.

Orders to impound vehicles using red lights without authorisation had also been issued, it said.

The VIPs who had been issued permission stickers for use of red beacons atop their vehicles were asked to return the same to the Home Department, the release said.

Those authorised to use red beacons as per today's notification would have to apply for new permission stickers.
