Punjab government today said it has decided to amend criteria for selecting awardees for state level Teachers Day function by choosing 25 per cent of them on the basis of their day-to-day performance.
Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema said it has come to his notice that many hard-working teachers 'shy away' from applying for the awards which are given by the state government every year to recognise their efforts in providing quality education to students, a statement said here.
He said despite a good track record, many teachers do not apply for the award due to which their contribution remains unnoticed.

However, Cheema said it was the duty of state government to acknowledge their contribution, so, unlike the earlier practice where teachers used to apply for the awards, 25 per cent of them would be selected on basis of their day to day performance.
The minister said the names of these teachers would be nominated by Education Department, which would be then analyzed by the scrutiny committee before making a final list of awardees.
He said for the remaining 75 per cent awards, the earlier practice of applying for the awards by the teachers and then the selection by scrutiny committee would be followed.
