Punjab government will hire private vehicles for its officers touring the field areas, an austerity measure adopted by it in order to cut down on the huge transportation expenses.

Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa today took a decision in this regard after getting it approved by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

"It has been estimated that the cost of running a government vehicle is about Rs 74,000 per month whereas the cost of operating a private vehicle is about Rs 40,000 per month.

"The Finance Department's decision will be a step forward to reduce avoidable expenditure of the government," a spokesperson of Finance Department said.

He said the vehicles will be taken on rent from open market through tendering process for which the head of department will be the competent authority.
