Punjab govt to observe eye donation fortnight

Punjab government will observe 'Eye donation fortnight' from today onwards till September 8 to generate awareness for the cause.

The focus during the fortnight would be to aware people about the importance of eye donation as around 12 lakh people in the country suffer from corneal blindness, Principal Secretary, Health, Vini Mahajan said today.

These people can get vision if enough corneas are available for transplantation, she said.

A state-level workshop on eye donation would also be organised on September 1 at Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar, Mahajan said.

There are 13 government and private sector eye banks in Punjab which are registered with Directorate of Research and Medical Education, she said.
 

These banks procure eye balls and perform Cornea transplant surgeries, the Principal Secretary said.
