Punjab government will set up a State Insititute of Sports, headquartered at Mohali near here.

A decision to this effect was taken at a cabinet meeting held here under the chiarmanship of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, an official spokesman said.

"The objective to set up a sports institute is to create a large pool of sportspersons, who could be groomed as prospective medalists of Olympics, Commonwealth, Asian games and other national and international sports competitions," an official spokesman said.

"These potentially talented athletes would be trained by renowned domestic and foreign coaches and would be provided nutritious diets besides accommodation in ultra modern hostels and foreign training and competition exposure," he said.

The headquarters of this institution would be at SAS Nagar (Mohali) and centers of excellence in selective sports discipline would also be established under it, he said.
