Union Minister Manish Tewari today said that Punjab is lagging behind due to "wrong policies" of the ruling SAD-BJP government in the state.

"The uniform approach is vital for overall development, but the state of Punjab is lagging behind due to alleged discriminating approach of the Akali-BJP Government," Tewari, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, told reporters here.

He said that the UPA Government is providing assistance to the states for welfare and development of the people and they should acknowledge it.

"It has become the tendency and the habit of Punjab Government to take the credit (of some schemes) without mentioning the contribution of the Centre," Tewari alleged.

The Union minister also said that the Food Security Ordinance will enable more than 70 per cent of the population to get foodgrains at highly subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 per kg.

"After the Right to Information, Right to Education, Right to Employment under MGNREGA, now the people are being empowered with Right to Food," he said.

He said that the government's next step is to provide safe and drinking water to all its citizens.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the union government's next step will be to provide safe and clean drinking water to the entire population of the country," he added.
